Loose Button Summer Trends event 2012

Extremely popular, tried and true Dermologica products!

Loose Button had their first party this past Wednesday and it was a hell of a great time! Their Summer Trends 2012 event brought out bloggers, beauty influencers, and 50 pairs of lucky Luxe Box subscribers to the Dermalogica offices in downtown Toronto!

At the event, attendees had a chance to drink wine, eat tasty cupcakes and apps, and mingle with other fellow beauty product lovers! There were stations set up by Dermologica for personal skin care consultations (my personal fave product is their awesome microexfoliant), and also representatives from Valentino and Benefit cosmetics to tell us all about their new and exciting releases!

The Dermologica training centre

The Loose Button event was held in partnership with The Kit - Canada's Online Beauty Mag!

My good friend Ivana came with me to the event. We learned about the brand spanking new Valentino fragrance, Valentina (ranging from $50-125, available now at The Bay and Holt Renfrew), as well as the just-released Benefit ultra plush lip glosses ($18 at Sephora and Murale). Both are fab products for the summer days ahead and we were fortunate to walk away with samples of both at the end of the night!

In addition to all the food and mingling, we had a chance to listen to Chantel Guertin, author, beauty expert, and The Kit’s editor-at-large, who revealed her top 10 summer beauty trends of 2012, along with great tips and product recommendations for each! They were:

  1. Hot pink lips
  2. Nail art
  3. Faux glow
  4. Great waves
  5. White teeth
  6. Luxe lashes
  7. Matching lips and nail colour
  8. Winged eyeliner
  9. Cream blush
  10. Flawless, glowing skin

Review: BB cream test #5 – Vichy

The fifth brand I’m testing in my quest for the best BB cream is Vichy Neovadiol Lumiere cream. It’s promoted as the first BB for mature skin (ie. menopausal age), and is able to densify and sculpt three facial zones, even and illuminate the complexion, as well as smooth and nourish the skin.  The cream claims to provide 24 hour hydration and possess Proteic GF + Pro-Xylane illuminating pigments. It can be purchased at Rexall or Shoppers Drug Mart for around 30 bucks. There is only one shade.

I know I’m years away from ”menopausal age” but this Vichy BB cream was worth checking out since it’s readily available at the Canadian drug stores. Honestly, I think this product can be used by anyone who is concerned about aging – Vichy is merely trying to create a BB cream for a specific demographic (and it’s a pretty good marketing plan).

The first noticeable thing about the BB cream is the colour. It’s very orangey compared to all the other creams I’ve tested. I found it looked okay with my skin tone, and it provided a very sheer coverage. It’s probably tied with Garnier when it comes to (useless) coverage. Let me explain this a bit more. A little of the cream went a long way, but if I added too much product, the orange colour became very obvious on my skin tone no matter how hard I tried to ‘blend’ it. You can see this from the photo of my arm.  I also believe that this shade is the worst of the ”all-in-ones” since many ladies will not be able to successfully wear this cream. I couldn’t use it to my satisfaction.

I must say the hydration of the Vichy BB cream is great. I can confidently say that it is the most moisturizing of all the BBs I’ve tried. I wore it with no base moisturizer and it was fine. I was also impressed by the ‘glow’ it provided from the formulation. But what a pity those were the only major redeeming factors of the product.

BB cream checklist time!

  • good moisturizing ability————–Great
  • hypoallergenic————————–Yes
  • SPF of at least 15———————No (BIG negative)
  • anti-aging elements——————–Yes
  • sheer/natural-looking coverage——Yes (but too sheer)
  • complementary to my skin tone—–Sort of
  • sufficient oil-control———————Ok
  • acceptable use/mL ratio—————Yes
  • under $45———————————Yes (~$30)
  • a ”nice” smell (if any)——————There is a fragrance, but it’s fine

Current BB cream ranking:

  1. Too Faced
  2. Boscia
  3. Vichy
  4. Marcelle
  5. Garnier

I placed the Vichy BB cream in the middle of my ranking but let me state that it is a HUGE distance away from Boscia. I would never purchase a BB cream that lacks SPF. While the cream was too sheer and orangey, I had to place it above Marcelle since it has great moisturizing ability, had anti-aging factors, and gave me glowing skin.

**Check my intro BB cream post and the listing of ALL my BB reviews here! For those wondering, I am NC30 in MAC code.

Style Sister saves…on mint nail polish

Wooo! After weeks of searching, I finally found the perfect mint-coloured nail polish at an awesome price! Rexall is selling all their Revlon nail enamel this week for $3.99! I purchased the ”Minted” colour. Love shade so much!

I’ve never been a huge fan of drugstore polish but at that price, I’m not complaining! I used 3 layers of of Minted plus a Lóreal  top coat. It took quite a bit of time to dry but it looks great! You like? Definitely contemplating going back to buy more colours!

The Revlon polish will be on sale until Thurs May 17th 2012.

Style Sister loves…Kid Robot YUMMY plush toys

Nothing makes me squeal with glee more than uber-cute plush. Kidrobot constantly releases stuffed toys that satisfy my craving for something squishy and adorable. This season, it’s all about the food in their YUMMY collection. Yep, cute food and I want it all!!

I’m not gonna lie, I want the giant cupcake, donut, and pizza. Or maybe the mini baby cupcake?! Gaaah. Googly eyes and dashed smiley faces! How can you not love it?! I feel like such a fan girl. So cute!

Want your own mini cupcake or giant ice cream sandwich? You can buy it all at Kidrobot or Magic Pony. Also noteworthy: ‘stache Labbits!

Three trends I just can’t get behind

There are times when I just don’t understand how particular trends/items get so popular. Really, it baffles me at how people can LOVE them so much. Uggs, Crocs, harem pants, sheer maxi skirts, and spider lashes come to mind. I suppose life would be boring if we all liked the same thing, but that doesn’t mean I can’t complain about them! Here are some trends that are currently annoying the crap out of me:

1. Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes -  They’re the new Uggs. I didn’t get annoyed with these shoes until I saw them on every other person at Osheaga last summer. I swear I saw more Sperrys than Docs or Chucks. WTF. How did a rock festival bring out so many douches? I can sort of let it go for the guys (not really) but what confuses me is WHY women wear them when they have a billion other shoe choices. They’re. so. mannish. and. fugly. The only time when it’s acceptable to wear these hideous shoes is if you’re on a boat. If you must wear the Sperry Top-Sider brand, what about these instead?

2. Collarless ”Chanel/Chanel-Inspired” Jackets – I honestly don’t understand why anyone in 2012 wants to wear such a boxy, old-fashioned jacket. I die a little inside when I see personal style bloggers who are so young pair this type of jacket (most common in tweed) with a blouse, skirt and pearls, consequently aging themselves below the neck 25 years. Do you want a man in your pants ever again? I guess I know the answer to that. Yes, Chanel is known for these collarless jackets, but just because it’s been made popular by a French fashion house doesn’t mean you should wear them. My mother absolutely refuses to wear this cut and she’s turning 65 this year. She calls it the ”old lady jacket”. Yeah. Save up for a Chanel flap bag or buy a jacket with a COLLAR!

3. The Accent Fingernail – I really tried to like this trend at first, but I gave up. So you want to colour 4 of your nails on your hand one way, and then go apeshit on your ring finger/whatever? How artistic and mind-blowing. I think my dislike of this trend comes partially from the fact that I’m not university age anymore. It’s juvenile. Also, in most professional settings, it’s not acceptable to bling-out your nails in general much less go all Picasso on a random finger. I think going bold (or sparkly or patterned) on every finger makes more sense. Go big or go home. Don’t make it look like you had a mental lapse while painting your nails! And no, guys don’t understand why you do this nor do they care how long it took you to do it.

What about you? Do you like/dislike these three trends?

Major Yorkdale expansion update! (May 2012)

The Yorkdale mall expansion has been going on forever, but after rooting around the internet a bit, I found some NEW (and very informative) details via iphoneincanada! It seems Oxford Properties, the real estate investment group, posted a floor plan of the new section of the mall last month, which detailed several new stores and their locations! Exciting! The floor plan has since been removed and replaced with an older version (a portion is posted above) but the important thing is that it WAS available and someone caught it (bwahaha)!

I’ve circled the new stores (that I can see) in GREEN.

New stores visible on the new expansion floor plan:

  • Ann Taylor
  • Anthropologie
  • Bell (not a kiosk anymore)
  • Best Buy Mobile
  • Holt Renfrew (new addition)
  • Joey’s Restaurant
  • Microsoft
  • North Face
  • Papyrus
  • Superdry
  • Ted Baker
  • Tesla Motors
  • Wilfred

Stores already present which will move into the new section:

  • Apple
  • Champs
  • Club Monaco
  • Hugo Boss
  • Mappins
  • Miss Sixty
  • Scotiabank
  • Telus

Based on my original post which listed predictions of the stores that could be present, I must say I’ve done pretty well so far! Wilfred, Anthropologie, and Ann Taylor are on the floor plan, and Tory Burch is already open! I’m pleasantly surprised with Ted Baker, and I’m crossing my fingers that women’s clothing will be available at the store since I haven’t been able to find it anywhere in Canada and I’m a huge fan.

So what do you think? I can’t wait to see more!

Visit the Yorkdale mall site here. Read my original post about the expansion (and official openings) here.

***Please note that this information from the floorplans is not official/confirmed so any stores and their locations are subject to change/removal.

Style Sister picks…Mother’s Day gifts 2012

Mother’s Day is slowly creeping upon us. What are you planning to buy? This year, my parents will be traipsing across multiple cities in Europe for the last half of the month, so what’s better than buying some great travel-friendly items for Mom? Regardless if your Mom is leaving on a jetplane or just chilling out, all these items are perfect for the months ahead!

I’ve already purchased the Philip Sparks for Danier travel wallet and Estee Lauder skincare, but I’m definitely contemplating buying any or all of the rest I’ve shown above! Plus, my I-never-know-what-to-buy-here’s-some-money Dad will need some assistance. Got you covered, Dad!

  1. Daywear advanced multi-protection creme SPF 15 (Estee Lauder, $51)
  2. Enameled giraffe bangle (J.Crew, $116)
  3. Shibori dyed scarf (BCBG Max Azria, $58 USD)
  4. Sunglasses with 2-toned sidepieces (Zara, $25.90)
  5. Lip balm SPF 15 (Kiehl’s, $12)
  6. Birch vegan Lennox tote (Matt and Nat, $128)
